South Africa Backdrop: An historical introduction for South African literary and cultural studies

The book presents a brief history of racial confrontation, domination, dispossession and reclamation in the region known today as the Republic of South Africa, from man’s earliest settlement in the sub-continent up to the present time. Such knowledge is fundamental to any study of South African literatures given that the poems, prose works and dram of South African writers is essentially socio-political, constituting in many instances a literature of ideology, commitment and protest.
