This book is about what homoerotic silence can do. My proposal is by no means an invitation to be silent: it is an exhortation to pay attention both to the processes that produce certain variants of silence and to the implications and effects that they generate in the homoerotic experience. Throughout its chapters, I portray some of the ways in which multiple processes of violence —in particular, homophobic violence— install painful affective and bodily traces in the lives of many non-heteronormative identities, as well as the ways in which poignant wounds are forged in the lives of homosexuals, faggot, gays and fags. Although silence usually means an absence of noise or an abstinence from speech, the truth is that it not only has an oppressive dimension but also a productive one; therefore, I consider silence as a powerful articulator of the homoerotic experience. Silencing, then, means bodily work that entails historical reasons and affective reasons, which implies recognizing that silence should not only be understood as negative mutism, but can also be a subjective position that provokes other creative registers of experience.
