French postrevolutionary penal law tried to create a discipline and law enforcement based on the principles born in the French Revolution. The population living in Vallespir (Rosselló), that benefited from local authorities and popular legal institutions, managed to adapt the law to their understanding and view of justice. This book gathers real stories from a time and a place that forced the penal law to coexist with local legal culture.
