Montgai and Butsenit were part of the Catalan feudal society of the modern centuries, a rural society that relied on its geographical surroundings and suffered from chronic and unpayable indebtedness. In this area, social and institutional power came from the management of these resources controlled by the Church and the secular nobility. In fact, they owned the monopoly over the land’s rights and duties. Little by little, changes and historical events damaged the feudal system. In this book, the author analyzes in detail banditry, the War of the Spanish Succession and how it affected these areas and their social structure. The early modern period was characterized by change and the late modern period initiated the disintegration of the feudal system.
