The marginalization of sex-diverse cultures is particularly notorious in the case of autobiographical writing, perhaps because all LGBTIQ+ autobiographical texts constitute, in one way or another, a coming out of the closet. This book contributes to a better knowledge of “gay” writing, its visibility and dignity in the Hispanic world. Through brief introductory essays to memorial, confessional, and autobiographical pieces written by some of the most relevant narrators and poets from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Cuba, Colombia, Chile, and Puerto Rico, La vida iba en serio reveals the relevance and, in some cases the surprising importance, of the current life experiences in these works.
The creators addressed are well-known personalities of the Hispanic cultures of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Pedro Almodóvar, Reinaldo Arenas, Abelardo Arias, Luis Cernuda, Rafael Chirbes, Jaime Gil de Biedma, Juan Goytisolo, Pedro Lemebel, Terenci Moix, Carlos Monsiváis, Salvador Novo, Emilio Prados, Oswaldo Reynoso, Xavier Villaurrutia, Luis Antonio de Villena or Luis Zapata.
