This book analyses the set of manuscripts that were exhibited in the María Moliner Room of the National Library of Spain, grouped under the heading: “The light of the Middle Ages in Catalan literature”. Two manuscripts kept in the Royal Library of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and in the library of the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation were added to this original core. The incorporation of these specimens expanded the expectations of the exhibition beyond the limits imposed by its title, to include two singular testimonies of the miniature production of the Crown of Aragon, illuminated during the last medieval centuries.
The selection of the codices was based on the study of the image, prioritizing the artistic analysis of the selected manuscripts and the value of the representations that they contain. The historical contextualisation and the interpretation of the broad semantic content emanating from its forms, constitute the dynamic elements of the discourse described in the book.
