This publication is a basic summary of the main contributions of Catalan thought between 1860 and 1990 concerning national identity. It analyzes the evolution the Catalan identity as a concept and the elements that shaped the Catalan spirit. The aim is to understand the idea of national identity from a theoretical point of view and the relevance of the migration phenomenon.
