During the first half of the 19th century, hygienic, pedagogical and military institutions believed that physical education could be a useful means to fight some of Spain’s issues. As a result, several elitist schools included physical exercise among their subjects to offer a complete and harmonized education. In this volume, the author includes a historical analysis that focuses on these changes and on their sociocultural context.
