Cooperation among humans is an enigma. No other living thing cooperates with its congeners as much as we humans do. At different levels, this is a general feature of all societies and historical periods. Except in very particular cases, there are evolutionary reasons that explain why altruistic cooperation is so rare in our planet’s biosphere. Why are humans different from all other living things? What motivates humans to perform such unusual acts? With the tools provided by anthropology and evolutionary biology, this book seeks to resolve this mystery.
