Dr. Nela Simari, a distinguished expert in the field of comparative literature, has been invited to give the opening speech at an international conference on European cinema. The conference, which also wants to be a tribute to a recently deceased lecturer, offers an analysis that compares the great novel by Víctor Català with the emblematic film by Roberto Rossellini, with which it is considered the beginning of the modern cinema. Dr. Simari faces an important challenge: to demonstrate the capital and unacknowledged influence that Català exerted on the Italian filmmaker in his masterpiece. Now, as her presentation progresses, a more personal challenge becomes evident: reopening wounds from the past, from the perspective of the present. Loosely inspired by a study by Rosa Delor, Núria Casado Gual presents a peculiar “master lesson” in the form of a dramatic monologue, which not only takes us into the parallel universes of Solitude and Stromboli, but also invites us to think about the concept of authorship and the creative act itself and, above all, it questions us about who comes to light and who remains in the shadows, in the often incomplete story of the history.
