Of all the guilds that participated in the abundant Catalan artistic production in the modern era, that of gilding remains, with no doubt, as one of the least known and studied. The reason must be sought in historiography, which has long seen in this practice the reflection of a baroque art to be outlawed. And although, recently, polychrome gilding has aroused a growing interest, it is analysed from a technical or stylistic point of view, or even in its relationship with painting and sculpture, which illustrates the difficulty of defining a practice that lies between crafts and art. This volume aims to renew the knowledge of this profession based on a quite remarkable corpus: the collection of one hundred and forty-three drawings (internships) of the gilders’ guild of Barcelona, which, together with the preserved manuscript sources, allow us to reconstruct the history of the gilding profession over a long period, how it was regulated, how its training was supervised and controlled, and how its activity was protected.
