Today, the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital is a modern hospital, on par with those in other regions of Catalonia. Getting here hasn’t been easy, especially in its early days. Many people, and particularly healthcare professionals, have worked tirelessly to achieve this. Without knowing the history, we lose our understanding of the present and cannot properly face the future.
This book explains the hospital’s journey from its beginnings to its consolidation as a high-quality university hospital. The work aims to recognize and pay tribute to many professionals who have dedicated themselves to defending public healthcare and the hospital’s growth and development from 1977 to 2003, as well as to the patients who have
been treated and the students who have trained there. It’s a chronicle told by a surgeon who arrived at that time and became involved in both the hospital and the university. All his beginnings were challenging. The book also includes some anecdotes that seem incredible today and which are included on his blog.
The story is based on documents, acts and diaries available to anyone who wants to consult them in the the Archives and Records Management Service of the University of Lleida.
