Miguel de Unamuno (Bilbao, 1864 – Salamanca, 1936) is a writer from the Generation of ’98, best known for his philosophical treatises and the novel Niebla (1914). In this book we offer a philological study that compares the works Abel Sánchez (1917) and Amor y Pedagogía (1902) from the perspective of tragic fatalism. The guiding thread of this literary analysis is Unamuno’s philosophical vitalism and the survival of some tragic concepts from classical Greek literature, with which Don Miguel constructed his Nivolesque narrative. The study discusses the similarities between both novels in a structural and thematic level. In both, Don Miguel exposes in a cathartic way the contradictory nature of the human being and, at the same time, the tragedy of human life; the inevitable passage of time and the shadow of immortality. This book also offers an appendix that includes a list of defined and exemplified terms of tragedy and a brief anthology of related texts.
