This work constitutes a critical and interdisciplinary analysis of the sociodemographic and housing market transformations in rural Catalonia, with a special focus on the Lleida region. The book arises from the need to address a central paradox in afforestation processes: while many villages have lost population and accumulated empty or disused houses, new residents and young locals face a critical lack of affordable housing.
The main purpose of the volume is to analyze the interconnection between structural depopulation and the dynamics of the rural real estate market in order to guide more effective public policies. The contributions focus on identifying the historical and geographical factors that have shaped the current map of territorial imbalances, evaluating the impact of limiting factors on access to housing, and proposing alternative management strategies, such as decommodification and the social economy, to guarantee the right to housing in rural areas.
